For more information please refer to the COVID 19 link on the LSCPA website.
Course Information
Description Concepts of basic algebra. Operations on real numbers and polynomials, solving equations, inequalities and systems, graphing, and problem solving are included.
Prerequisites None
Learning Outcomes PSLO 1: Critical Thinking Skills-Uses creative thinking, innovation, inquiry and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information.
Creatively identifies problem, argument, or issue (to determine extent of information needed); differentiates the facts from opinions as relates to situation; constructs possible solutions or prediction or consequences; uses logical, sound reasoning to justify conclusion.
PSLO 2: Communication Skills-Demonstrates effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and/or visual communication.
Expresses a strong thesis; organizes information with effective transitions & sequencing of ideas; uses substantial, logical & specific development of ideas; details are relevant, original, credible and correctly documented when appropriate to show an effective development and interpretation of ideas; and presents ideas in appropriate mode of expression for the task.
PSLO3: Empirical and Quantitative Skills-Applies the manipulation and/or analysis of numerical data or observable facts resulting in informed conclusions.
Identifies mathematical or scientific principles needed to complete task; uses mathematical or scientific principles needed to complete task; analyzes how to use the principles; and applies problem-solving skills in mathematical or scientific principles needed to complete task with correct informed conclusions.
Core Objectives MATH 0310- Beginning Algebra
(PSLOs 1,2 and 3)
Course objectives (CSLOs):
The student is expected to locate, compare, and order integers and rational numbers using a number line.
The student is expected to generate equivalent numerical expressions using order of operations.
The student is expected to identify a number, its opposite, and its absolute value.
The student is expected to add, subtract, multiply and divide positive rational numbers fluently
The student is expected to classify whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers using a visual representation such as a Venn diagram to describe relationships between sets of numbers.
The student is expected to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers fluently.
The student is expected to represent a given situation using verbal descriptions, tables, graphs, and equations in the form y = kx or y = x + b.
The student is expected to write an equation that represents the relationship between independent and dependent quantities from a table.
The student is expected to determine if two expressions are equivalent.
The student is expected to write one-variable, one-step equations, 2-step equations and inequalities to represent constraints or conditions within problems.
